I was asked a few months back if I would be interested in creating the official event and tee shirt artwork for Paint Louis 2014. Being familiar with some of the history behind the event made my decision a “no brainer” and I gladly accepted the challenge. I attempted to create a piece that was relatively easy to read, yet not watered down in any way stylistically. I also had to work with their color limitations for screen printing so I tried to keep the pallet to a minimum. I ended up going with a Gold, Navy, Black, and Lt Grey color scheme which is similar to their local NFL team’s colors. I also threw out a few more color options I liked for good measure. In the end, I believe they made some changes to the colors for their event tee which I am eager to see this weekend in person at the event this weekend.
Paint Louis is taking place from August 29th through Sept 1 in St. Louis, MO. If you are anywhere near the are, we encourage you to come out to check out all of the artwork and events that will be taking place this weekend. Saratoga Sake and myself will be there repping Wild Style Technicians along with our freind Unique ASK XMEN so feel free to stop by and say hi if you see us out there working!
Ebik reached out a couple of weeks back to let me know he was coming down with a friend to San Diego to paint and asked if I wanted to join. I was glad to be able to accept the offer as I felt I needed to paint something anyway to kick things off for 2014. So as usual, I didn’t really plan anything in the way of colors and I didn’t have a completed sketch but I figured those minor details could be ironed out on the spot. I arrived at the Writerz Blok around mid afternoon and we met by Ebik shortly thereafter. We picked a prime location on the first wall and went to work buffing our spots. Ebik knocked his outline off the dome quickly and picked a color scheme that I agreed to try and match to a certain extent. Having to return back to LA the same day, Ebik completed his piece. I on the other hand took my sweet time trying to maximize my scraps to put together a decent fill and had to come back 5 days later to complete my piece as the Blok was closed for 4 days. Overall, I was pleased with the outcome and was happly to get in a couple of much needed painting sessions. Thanks to Ebik for dragging me out! Check out his work and follow him at @ureye on Instagram.
I am honored to be teaching a new Graffiti course at the Art Academy of San Diego beginning on January 11th. The beginning course runs for 7 weeks with an option to attend a second 7 week intermediate course. My initial plans are to have a heavy emphasis on lettering development, sketch and black book work followed by a few weeks of spray paint work and exercises with hands-on instruction. Some of the areas I plan on covering include: History, Terminology, Styles, Basic Styles, Bar Letters, Black Book Work, Hand Styles, Color Theory and the proper Use of Tools which all ultimately lead to the students being able to create their own styles and pieces.
I have taught and helped many aspiring artists in my 28 years as a Graffiti Writer. While many are able to grasp and execute the basic and relatively mechanical lettering concepts I instruct, only a handful have utilized the system as it should be used: as a stepping stool to creating more advanced and organic letter styles. People often say “you have to know the rules before you can break them”. Metaphorically speaking, I teach “the rules” in the hopes that one day you know them well enough that you can break them and have it go unnoticed.
Here are some photos from last weekend’s Style-A-Thon 2013 at Writerz Blok. Thank you to Ironlak for flying out Jurne as our special guest and for supplying paint and some goodies for the participating artists! The DJ’s, MC’s, and B-Boys did their thing throughout the day and kept the crowd entertained while the artists worked on their pieces. Overall, it was a great event and we’re glad to be able to enjoy the day and produce new works with great friends and artists. Once again, a very special thank you goes out to Jurne and Ironlak for helping to arrange for his trip out on short notice!
So after a non-eventful Saturday night (we were beat), we were picked up on Sunday morning, taken to get breakfast, and then dropped back off at the wall. We were burning through cans like nobodies business so we had to grab a few more cans from the shop in order to finish. The weather again, started off great, however it did warm up quite a bit in the afternoon but not enough to be an issue. Zone had to catch an earlier flight back to San Diego so we wished him safe travels and proceeded to put the finishing touches on the production. WST would again like to thank Beks, Solar, Hazer, Dope, and the rest of the staff at Get Use 2 It for the tremendous hospitality. Overall, it was an great experience and we had an amazing weekend… and made some great new friends in the process.
