Ebik reached out a couple of weeks back to let me know he was coming down with a friend to San Diego to paint and asked if I wanted to join. I was glad to be able to accept the offer as I felt I needed to paint something anyway to kick things off for 2014. So as usual, I didn’t really plan anything in the way of colors and I didn’t have a completed sketch but I figured those minor details could be ironed out on the spot. I arrived at the Writerz Blok around mid afternoon and we met by Ebik shortly thereafter. We picked a prime location on the first wall and went to work buffing our spots. Ebik knocked his outline off the dome quickly and picked a color scheme that I agreed to try and match to a certain extent. Having to return back to LA the same day, Ebik completed his piece. I on the other hand took my sweet time trying to maximize my scraps to put together a decent fill and had to come back 5 days later to complete my piece as the Blok was closed for 4 days. Overall, I was pleased with the outcome and was happly to get in a couple of much needed painting sessions. Thanks to Ebik for dragging me out!  Check out his work and follow him at @ureye on Instagram.

I took a little road trip this past weekend to paint with Ebik and Strae at the Venice Beach Art Walls.  I have been wanting to paint there for some time so I was happy to receive the invite.  We arrived at the wall around 1PM and thankfully there was still space so we went straight to work.  About 4 relaxing hours later we were putting on the finishing touches and trying to get good flicks with our phones.  Definitely a very different experience painting on the beach with a fresh ocean breeze but its something I could definitely get used to.  Great day painting with good people.  I’ll be back soon.

Graffiti: Fundamentals, Techniques & Style classes by IzzeWST starting in January

I am honored to be teaching a new Graffiti course at the Art Academy of San Diego beginning on January 11th. The beginning course runs for 7 weeks with an option to attend a second 7 week intermediate course. My initial plans are to have a heavy emphasis on lettering development, sketch and black book work followed by a few weeks of spray paint work and exercises with hands-on instruction. Some of the areas I plan on covering include: History, Terminology, Styles, Basic Styles, Bar Letters, Black Book Work, Hand Styles, Color Theory and the proper Use of Tools which all ultimately lead to the students being able to create their own styles and pieces.

I have taught and helped many aspiring artists in my 28 years as a Graffiti Writer. While many are able to grasp and execute the basic and relatively mechanical lettering concepts I instruct, only a handful have utilized the system as it should be used: as a stepping stool to creating more advanced and organic letter styles. People often say “you have to know the rules before you can break them”. Metaphorically speaking, I teach “the rules” in the hopes that one day you know them well enough that you can break them and have it go unnoticed.
